During the closed economic era of the 1970s in Sri Lanka, the general public faced severe hardships due to commodity shortages and exploitation in the black market. In the face of this critical situation, there was a pressing need to provide the public with affordable and equitable access to building materials.
As a solution to this challenge, the Building Materials Corporation (BMC) was established based on the visionary idea of the then-Minister of Housing and Construction, Peter Keuneman. The institution was designed to serve as a centralized, state-regulated hub, ensuring fair and controlled prices.
